I threw about everything at it I could think of It's a good bright white paper, with both internal and external sizing, so it's pretty tough. I'm not terribly hard on my paper, but I did use some of the rougher techniques I could think of. This is the lb. I worked very wet in wet on the two examples above, and used spatter, spray, salt and scraping--it handled all of those well. I hadn't stretched or taped the paper down to a board, so it did buckle slightly while wet, but it dried nicely--and since I usually DO tape down my paper when doing an actual painting rather than working in my journal, I don't consider that a problem.

I didn't notice any buckling in the small journals I made Posted by Kate Cathy Johnson at 5: Kate Cathy Johnson November 8, at 6: Ellie Knol November 8, at 6: Anne Rita Taylor November 9, at 9: Diana December 11, at Melissa Fischer June 26, at 3: Kate Cathy Johnson June 26, at 6: Patti Waterfield - Art February 24, at 9: Newer Post Older Post Home. This is the little accordion journal, with cold press paper I packed up the accordion and headed out to Watkins Mill to explore its capabilities.

I love that pine tree and it made a terrific subject. I started with an ink sketch of the trunk, then tried a variety of effects that the cold press paper handled just fine I painted the small branches with the pointed, sharpened end of my watercolor brush, below. A graded wash, and drybrush with a flat brush at top and a round one at the bottom. I enjoyed the texture, which you can see above in this photo taken on a sunny day! Again a graded was was successful on the CP paper I love the way you can work across the fold in this type of book, and just keep going!

Though it IS watercolor paper, I decided to try other mediums as well I made the brush from a garden stake It did not disappoint! Over a couple weeks, I used the Stonehenge Aqua in different projects to get a feel for the papers.

Painting on the hot press paper was a dream, and I loved using a watercolor block. In the past, I have used loose sheets of paper, and have to either stretch the paper or flatten it after painting. All that water makes the paper buckle, but using the block eliminated all of that. The paper was a nice clean shade of white, rather than a cream, which I thought helped the paints maintain more of their vibrancy in the finished works. Now on to that fantastic cold press block….

I wanted to share the texture because it was the key factor between the Stonehenge Aqua and other papers. Sometimes the texture of cold press paper can be a bit aggressive from the pressing process. This can make it a bit trickier to paint fine details on and to control the paint. I really enjoyed working with it, and felt it had enough texture that cold press typically does but without being overwhelming.

The absorbancy and color were just as fantastic as the hot press, so overall I was very pleased.
